The Tall Ships Races – Hartlepool 2010

Hartlepool is proud to have won the honour of being the final host port and the only UK host port for The Tall Ships Races in August 2010.

The Tall Ships Races are an internationally acclaimed annual competition organised by Sail Training International and held every summer in European waters. Each year between 70 and 100 vessels from 15-20 countries, crewed by some 2-3,000 young people from over 30 countries worldwide take part in this unique event that combines four days of activities in each port with racing or cruising-in-company between ports.

Hartlepool hosted a successful cruise-in-company in 2005 when 37 Tall Ships were attracted to Hartlepool on their way to NewcastleGateshead.  The positive experience and warm welcome received by the Tall Ships' Captains and crew, coupled with our ambitious and exciting bid championed by Hartlepool Mayor, Stuart Drummond, and Hartlepool Borough Council Chief Executive, Paul Walker, led to Hartlepool beating off stiff competition from Leith, Aberdeen and Newcastle to become host port in The Tall Ships Races 2010.

We are expecting to welcome up to 1 million visitors and 100 Tall Ships to our spectacular event.

The Sail Training Experience

The main drive behind the Races is to provide an opportunity for young people to develop their personal skills in a challenging and memorable sail-training environment and hence at least 50% of a Tall Ship’s crew must be aged 15-25 years.

Young people will experience the thrill and adventure of life on board a Tall Ship and be involved in almost every activity on board - taking the helm, setting sails and keeping watch, washing dishes and climbing the rigging or “going aloft” is always a particular favourite!

Whilst on board the young trainees will meet people from different walks of life including the permanent crew who are a group of professional seafarers who will ensure they get the most from their adventure.  Each day, as the trainees’ experience and confidence grows, so will their involvement in the activities on board.  They will have the opportunity to discover talents they never knew they possessed whilst contributing to the ultimate team working experience.

“Sail training is an adventure activity for people of all ages and abilities. It includes instruction in all aspects of sailing but its purpose goes far, far beyond this. Sail training uses the experience of being at sea principally as a means to help people learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents and understand the value of working as a team. In some programmes today it forms the setting for much wider aspects of education at sea.”   Sail Training International

The Sail Training Opportunity in August 2010

Hartlepool Borough Council, as organisers of The Tall Ships Races – Hartlepool 2010, would love to see as many people as possible having the unforgettable experience of being a member of the crew on a Tall Ship voyage.  We particularly encourage young people to take part in the Kristiansand to Hartlepool race in 2010 so friends and family can stand at the quayside and give them a rousing welcome back into Hartlepool.

The route for The Tall Ships Races 2010

You will join the ship in Kristiansand, Norway, on Saturday 31st July on crew changeover day.  There you will get to know your Captain, crew and fellow trainees and experience the ‘Eve of Sail’ in the evening followed by the ‘Parade of Sail’ on Sunday 1st August.  Then you will start the Race across the North Sea to Hartlepool with the other participating Tall Ships.

Young people will spend around 6 days at sea on a Tall Ship and no prior knowledge or experience of sailing is required, just the will to give it a go and share in the challenge of sailing a Tall Ship out on the open sea.

The Tall Ships must arrive into Hartlepool port by 12 noon on Saturday 7th August, where the trainees enjoy the fun, excitement, entertainment and activities of the Crew Parade, Crew Prize-giving and Crew Party before departing the ship on Monday 9th August.

 Cost

The cost of a sail training place differs from ship to ship and the length of race, however the cost is in the region of £1,000 (less if on a smaller vessel).  In addition to this are the travel costs from home to the start port and then home from the finish port.

Food and drink, training, equipment and clothing are all included within the cost of the voyage.

Next steps

The Tall Ships Races are the perfect vehicle to engage young people in an unforgettable experience on a Tall Ship voyage where they can learn as much about themselves as they can about sailing.

If you are interested in either funding a sail training place for a young person, or doing it yourself, please contact Lesley Strickland, Tall Ships Project Officer, and she will put you in touch with the ships taking part in the Kristiansand to Hartlepool race in 2010.

“Sail training requires participants to confront many demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and the acceptance of personal responsibility, promotes an acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. For most who undertake sail training on Tall Ships it is a positive life-changing experience.”
